Why blog?

So you've started a blog, welcome to 2008. Why blog now? Do people still read blogs? Thanks to instagram and twitter don't people just get all their information from pictures and in less that 140 characters? These are all some of the thoughts that came into my mind before I started my blog. Well, apart from having dreams of writing a Carrie Bradshaw-esque column, the real inspiration came from me just being sick and tired of reading the same thing. I started reading blogs a while back probably around 2011, it seemed like such a buzzing, creative community and I was instantly hooked. I had my favourite blogs which I had to read almost daily and I admired how they stayed so motivated and unique. I learned a lot from these early blogs, more than I have from magazines therefore making them lucrative. In the past couple months I have noticed that this creative individual group of blogs have meshed into one giant website. They almost all look similar and all report on the same products. It almost seems robotic. Now, don't get me wrong I don't begrudge these bloggers in fact I admire and applaud their success, I love the fact they have made a voice for themselves and have shown that us consumers are much more savvy than some brands and advertisers think we are. I just miss the personality in blogging.
You can sit with us.
I'm a big advocate for "don't judge a book by it's cover", its something I live by and wish more people did too. Within the blogging community there should be a "don't judge a blog by its numbers" motto. Blogging has turned into a business all about numbers, there's a strong emphasis on it and with some bloggers they see it as a race. Getting to X amount of followers in X amount of time seems like their goal all whilst spewing the same tired content. In an age of 'follow backs' and 'like for likes' honesty and authenticity in blogging is being lost. As well as the more established blogs, I love the smaller blogs who are just starting out, there's an innocence and excitement of where this blog could go (unless their in it for the numbers in which case I've lost interest).

How does my blog fit into this? Well, I focus more on natural beauty, skincare and being yourself. Where I do love nail polish and have way too much of it, I wanted to add some thing more to game. My post about life after University has been one of my most popular. I think its because most people can relate to it and sometimes we just need reminding that we all go through similar struggles. I also wanted to write about how it's important to be unique and to be yourself, we don't want to be a generation of clones.

The name of my blog is a little obscure, not exactly what you'd expect from a beauty blog. The name 'The Chronicles of Wasted Time' came from exactly that, it is a chronicle of how I 'waste' time. "Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted"- John Lennon. I may take this a little too literal. Over the past few years I've been conscious about the time that has past, if I had started blogging when I first wanted to (but didn't because I was too reserved) who knows where I'd be? It's also inspired by one of Shakespeare's sonnets, excuse me but my inner geek is showing.

There you have it, that's my two cents. I'd love to know what you think and what are your opinions on blogging.

  2. Really interesting. Although I've been reading some blogs for years, it wasn't until about the past year that I realised how many are really out there and I can see a lot of truth in what you've said about some of those in the blogging community.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I've been reading a lot of the same blogs for years too. I just wish it was more about the content nowadays rather than numbers or PR samples. By the way I really enjoyed reading your post about coping with hayfever. I suffer with it quite bad and found it very helpful. :)

  3. Found your blog after last night's Twitter chat with Gem (: I really enjoyed reading this post. The journey that blogging has taken over the past 6 years or so really interests me too - it's crazy to think back to where it "began" and where it is now. I miss the homegrown aspect of blogging too, before samples, numbers, stats, goals and collaborations. Of course it's amazing to see how the community has expanded and developed, I've had some out of the world opportunities from me blog, but I can't help but think that over the course of time, blogs have nearly lost the sparkle that catapulted them into the spotlight in the first place. Lovely post! x

    1. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post (and to leave a comment, I love that). I feel exactly the same as you, I miss the home-grown aspect of blogging also. I also miss how blogs used to look like blogs, they were more personal that way. I love that blogs are becoming more popular but I feel its losts its way a bit during the journey. xx

  4. If you want a blog that looks like a blog, mine certainly does. I have only just started out so I have none of these pretty designs (one day though). You know, a lot of blogs are all the same like you say, with the same products and content but I still find myself reading them again and again!
